Teleradiology uses computer networking to connect regional hospitals with the radiologists. The objective of teleradiology is the transmission of radiological images or image sequences between different sites for the purpose of interpretation and consultation. Images such as CT and MRI can be sent by computer link for rapid viewing. This is especially critical in emergency situations. Because the teleradiology network can be connected to the radiologists' homes, no time is lost, even on weekends or during the night. Digitally transmitted images can be presented, analyzed and discussed simultaneously at different sites. The introduction of teleradiology will reduce current costs. We have found savings in film material, the transportation of patients, staff, as well as from the sharing of resources. With rapid information flow, a further reduction of costs is possible, e.g. shorter hospitalization times of patients.
